Summary

It's November 1991。 George H。 W。 Bush is in the White House, Nirvana's in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer。

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie。 They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio。 Both have good reasons for wanting to get away。 For Charlie, it's guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer。 For Josh, it's to help care for his sick father。 Or so he says。 Like the Hitchcock heroine she's named after, Charlie has her doubts。 There's something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn't seem to want Charlie to see inside the car's trunk。 As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she's sharing a car with the Campus Killer。 Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie's suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there's nowhere to run。 In order to win, Charlie must do one thing--survive the night。

I’ve loved all of Sager’s books up to this point, but this one missed the mark for me。 As tedious as it was predictable, it was not the caliber that I’ve come to expect from this author。

4。5 ⭐️ This book was a roller coaster! Several unreliable characters kept this story twisting and turning and I didn’t see a lot of them coming。 Repeatedly found myself slamming my fists out of frustration and shock and disbelief。 But, lost half a star because i’m unsure how I felt about the ending。 The “final” twist resolved a question I needed an answer to, but was disappointing to find out。 Overall, fast paced and easy read。

talk abt twists & turns babey ! was late to work trying to finish this, tho i can’t say i totally loved the conceit of it, or any of the characters really。 still had a fantastic time。

3。5 I am pleasantly surprised that Sager was able to pull the end together because I was not rooting for our girl。 She was just so immature in her thought process! I do not say that lightly。 I want to stand behind our main character but when she continuously makes dangerous decision after dangerous decision, I just lose interest in her well-being。 I just wanted her to be smarter。

Not as good as Final Girls, or some of his other books。 But still an edge on your seat thriller。 I loved it!

My least favorite book by Riley Sager。 Not bad per se, the idea is entertaining and the pacing is good, but the main character has the IQ of a lamp, so yeah… Frustating? I will still read whatever he publishes next。

finally a mystery/thriller where I figured out who the murderer was! this book gave me lots of Ted Bundy vibes for the majority of the book! At first it was a bit confusing trying to figure out the structure of the book, but the story grabbed me from the very beginning! can’t wait to read more from Riley Sager! I love his books!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I have liked Riley Sager's previous books, so I was excited about this new release。 While I know that books are not meant to always be realistic, this one bothered me because the premise was just too off。 What person, who just lost their best friend to a murder by a random person, would accept a ride home with a complete stranger and drive overnight, nonetheless。 It drove me nuts when the main character would say to herself that she probably shouldn't be doing this, but did it anyway。 This was s I have liked Riley Sager's previous books, so I was excited about this new release。 While I know that books are not meant to always be realistic, this one bothered me because the premise was just too off。 What person, who just lost their best friend to a murder by a random person, would accept a ride home with a complete stranger and drive overnight, nonetheless。 It drove me nuts when the main character would say to herself that she probably shouldn't be doing this, but did it anyway。 This was said not once, but many times。 I also did not like the "movie reels' that would play in the main character's mind。 It was interesting in the beginning, but I grew tired of it as I read on。 That aside, later in the book, there is a character who has stage 4 cancer and is expected to only have weeks left to live; however, this person is able to disarm a 20 year old girl and hunt her down like prey。 This part made no sense to me either。 Once I got halfway, I was committed to finishing it as there were a few twists that were interesting。 Once I figured out who the killer was, I was just ready for find out how he was caught。 In the end, all loose ends are tied up, but too many things did not add up for me。 Unfortunately, this book does not live up to his earlier books。 。。。more

I read this book in two days (which is fast for me。) very good read。 There might have been a couple of plot holes, but overall I would recommend。

Between a 3。5 and a 4。 Maybe a 4 - because it does still cross my mind, weeks after having read it。 Maybe a 3。5 - because I figured out who the bad guy was super early in the book。 Riley Sager is an incredible writer, so I did really enjoy the general reading experience。 Based on what I’ve seen from everyone’s reviews, it’s easier to understand and enjoy this book if you were alive in 1991 and old enough to remember it。 I’ve seen a lot of 20 somethings judging this book through the eyes of peopl Between a 3。5 and a 4。 Maybe a 4 - because it does still cross my mind, weeks after having read it。 Maybe a 3。5 - because I figured out who the bad guy was super early in the book。 Riley Sager is an incredible writer, so I did really enjoy the general reading experience。 Based on what I’ve seen from everyone’s reviews, it’s easier to understand and enjoy this book if you were alive in 1991 and old enough to remember it。 I’ve seen a lot of 20 somethings judging this book through the eyes of people who have never known a world without cellphones and the internet。 。。。more

2。5 stars I can't figure out if this book was meant to be ridiculously campy so it would come across as comical, but that's how I interpreted it。 It is kind of like the show "24。" The whole premise of the book is surviving the night hour by hour with someone out to get you。 I love this author, but this one is my least favorite of his books so far。 The main character made the stupidest decisions ever, the movie trances were a stretch, and the end result of Charlie and Josh's relationship was not 2。5 stars I can't figure out if this book was meant to be ridiculously campy so it would come across as comical, but that's how I interpreted it。 It is kind of like the show "24。" The whole premise of the book is surviving the night hour by hour with someone out to get you。 I love this author, but this one is my least favorite of his books so far。 The main character made the stupidest decisions ever, the movie trances were a stretch, and the end result of Charlie and Josh's relationship was not believable。 。。。more

I’ve read every Riley book that has been released and I feel like I set myself up for failure。 The first one I read was Lock Every Door and I don’t think any other book of his will compare。 This book was okay, but I found it a little predictable and far fetched at moments。 I will admit I thought the Campus killer was someone else, but halfway through the book guessed who it was。 It wasn’t bad, but not my favorite read。

3。25The writing was excellent, engaging; I read this a fast as my schedule allowed。 All the star deductions are due to my disappointment in the ending。

I think it's time to admit I don't like Sager。 I keep reading his books, and they always end up as hate reads。 This one though。。。by far the worst。 None of the characters made logical choices, the twist pretty much had to happen, and the ending was infuriating。 It gets two stars from me, and that second star is only because Sager at least writes an engaging hate read。 I think it's time to admit I don't like Sager。 I keep reading his books, and they always end up as hate reads。 This one though。。。by far the worst。 None of the characters made logical choices, the twist pretty much had to happen, and the ending was infuriating。 It gets two stars from me, and that second star is only because Sager at least writes an engaging hate read。 。。。more

I am not quite sure what to say about this book。 I have heard such great things about Riley Sager books, but this one definitely doesn't live up to the reputation。 I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either。 It is one of those books that you will forget about right after you finish reading。 There is nothing that makes this one worth remembering。 Without giving too much away, the book reads like a movie。 The main character, Charlie (a female college student) is obsessed with movies and when re I am not quite sure what to say about this book。 I have heard such great things about Riley Sager books, but this one definitely doesn't live up to the reputation。 I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either。 It is one of those books that you will forget about right after you finish reading。 There is nothing that makes this one worth remembering。 Without giving too much away, the book reads like a movie。 The main character, Charlie (a female college student) is obsessed with movies and when reality becomes too much for her to handle she escapes into "movies" in her mind。 Taking place in the 90's, her roommate and best friend was murdered by a serial killer and she blames herself。 She decides to leave school and gets a ride with a stranger off a ride share board on campus。 She finds herself in dangerous situations and does everything she can to just survive。 Things I didn't like about the book are how predictable it was。 You can see everything coming。 I figured out who the serial killer was in the beginning of the book。 It wasn't much of a mystery。 Also Charlie is a rather annoying character。 Know how when you watch a horror movie and yell at an actor to turn around or don't do something? That's what you will be doing this entire book。 She always makes the wrong choice! It wasn't all bad。。。I liked that it was a quick easy read。 I like how everything was wrapped up nicely at the end with a little twist。 If you like reliving 90's nostalgia you will probably enjoy this book。 。。。more

some kind things first: it's enjoyable, i guess。 the predictability in the second half and the motives for some of the characters killed it a bit for me aswell as how frustrating and repetitive the POV changes (they would always recap exactly what we just read with very little input from the character we have now, only for what they do add for Charlie to guess to the exact T in the very next chapter anyway)it's not that predictability in novels makes them unenjoyable, but i think mystery/thrille some kind things first: it's enjoyable, i guess。 the predictability in the second half and the motives for some of the characters killed it a bit for me aswell as how frustrating and repetitive the POV changes (they would always recap exactly what we just read with very little input from the character we have now, only for what they do add for Charlie to guess to the exact T in the very next chapter anyway)it's not that predictability in novels makes them unenjoyable, but i think mystery/thrillers/horror hinge so much on the suspense of needing to know what happens that it ruins it when you spend the next 100-200 pages just like "okay yeah, i figured as much" this feels like a good "starter" thriller/mystery book, though。 。。。more

This was mostly all right but it wasn't quite what I was expecting。 I also think it would possibly have been better as a short story。 Or a movie, which is obviously what the author was going for。 There was a LOT of repetitive stuff in here like the author knew he had to pad out the content。 Pretty unnecessary, which made the pace suffer a bit。 Especially the first half of the book。 The tone was good, and very (obviously) cinematic。 Charlie was a really annoying main character and I don't like th This was mostly all right but it wasn't quite what I was expecting。 I also think it would possibly have been better as a short story。 Or a movie, which is obviously what the author was going for。 There was a LOT of repetitive stuff in here like the author knew he had to pad out the content。 Pretty unnecessary, which made the pace suffer a bit。 Especially the first half of the book。 The tone was good, and very (obviously) cinematic。 Charlie was a really annoying main character and I don't like that name for women at all, so it put me off her from the start。 Even though the book starts out a bit slow, the rest of it is pretty quick and mostly fun to read。, although a lot of the "twists" are kind of dumb。 I'm interested to try other books from this author。Someday I'd really like to read a book where the unreliable narrator (view spoiler)[is actually unreliable (hide spoiler)]。 。。。more

This girl is clearly mentally ill & just suffered the lost of her best friend。 No shit, she blocks trauma out。 。。。more

Josh was extremely suspicious, but at the same time, it felt TOO easy to pin him as the bad guy。 Every time I thought I was getting close to a concrete answer, Sager would just throw a wrench into my thoughts which was a bit frustrating, but I lived for it!Typically, I take in books as I go without forming theories, but my friend (who I buddy read with) really made my brain work! While I did have some ideas, there was nothing I was certain on which I appreciated (I know other people figured out the twist early on, so I guess it depends)。 I won’t spoil too much, but the drama towards the end was everything! -- super action packed, and I was screaming inside to know how things ended。 (Also, the actual ending felt very meta!)The mind movies did get confusing at times, and some of Charlie’s actions were just dumb (like seriously?? I don’t even know what she was thinking half the time)。 The character motives felt a bit weak and blown out of proportion as well。 Despite the mixed reviews and my critiques, I had a fun time reading this! 。。。more
